About Pollination

POLLINATION: THE TRANSFER OF POLLEN FROM THE ANTHER, THE MALE PART OF THE FLOWER TO THE STIGMA, THE FEMALE PART. IS CALLED POLLINATION. SOME PLANTS SELFPOLLINATE BUT IN MOST INSTANCES AN OUTSIDE AGENT, SUCH AS WIND, WATER, BIRD MAMMAL, OR INSECT, ESPECIALLY A BEE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR POLLEN TRANSFER. SOME PLANTS WOULD NOT BE POLLINATED AND WOULD PRODUCE NO SEED IF IT WERE NOT FOR INSECTS. THE CALLED BEES OF WHICH THERE ARE MANY SPECIES ARE ESPECIALLY WELL SUITED TO BE POLLINATORS. THE HAIRS ON THEIR BODIES ARE BRANCHED (PLUMOSE) SO POLLENIS CAUGHT IN THEM EASILY AND THUS CARRIED FROM ONE FLOWER TO THE NEXT. THE HONEY BEE IS AN ESPECIALLY HAIRY CREATURE AND AN IMPORTANT POLLINATOR.
